Overdue Books Could Lead You to Court

Is that overdue library book still sitting on your table, waiting to be returned? Did you accidentally pack a video in with your Christmas ornaments last year? Was that book you swore you returned hiding under your car seat for months?

Each year the Whitewright Public Library loses books and other items. Some, of course, are legitimately lost and will never be recovered. The vast majority, however, are still in the possession of the original borrower.

What makes these losses especially difficult is their effect on other borrowers. Imagine the frustration of a student who desperately needs a particular volume to complete a project but finds the book is checked out or lost. And replacing a missing book often means less funds are available to purchase new items.

Due to the number of items lost, in 2007 the library will begin submitting information to the City Court for prosecution for theft of City property. It has been within the library's rights to do so for many years, but it has not been enforced.

The "last chance" to clear your record with the library will be during the month of January, when fine amnesty will be granted for items due prior to December 31, 2006. Materials returned must be in good condition but no questions will be asked nor fines charged. Replacement fees for damaged materials will not be waived. Amnesty does not apply to fines on materials already returned but were overdue at the time of return and not paid for.

There are night drops available at the library, but if you are unable to return your item in person, you may also send them back via mail to PO Box 984, Whitewright TX 75491. You can also call the library at 903-364-2955 or email wwpl@texoma.net if you have any questions about overdue items.
