10:57 am - Veronica Mars DVD Donation
Books

A coalition of fans of the critically acclaimed television series Veronica Mars is showing its support for the show by donating DVDs of the first
season to libraries across the country, including the Whitewright Public Library.

Time Magazine calls it "one of the six best dramas on TV," and TV Guide named "The Best Show You're Not Watching." Veronica Mars was also nominated for an AFI award for "2005 TV Program of the Year."

"Veronica Mars is a celebration of what it is to be a young woman--and a welcome alternative to the feminine model that is threatening to consume American culture. The show is smart and cool and clever--all virtues that are lauded in its geeky heroine. The show's writing and casting also transcend the teen detective log line by not imagining Veronica as a super girl, but a teenager with a strong father figure and loyal friends who live in a community with complicated images of race, class and family--like all of us." -- The American Film Institute

01:20 pm - September Anime Program
Books
The next meeting will be Thursday, September 14th @ 5 p.m. at the library. Since we didn't have a July meeting, we will select from the July and August ADVocates discs, which have episodes from the following titles:

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World [TV-MA Edited] (Episodes 1 & 2)
Bemused teenager Takeru is beginning to feel despondent about life when he happens upon the beautiful Hikari, a girl who literally falls from the stars. Riddled with a murky past and looking toward an even darker future, Hikari unknowingly leads Takeru and his friends down a dangerous path -- one by which unsuspecting Takeru will come to learn how cruel the world really can be.

Cyberteam in Akihabara [TV-PG] (Episodes 1 & 2)
Chronicles the exploits of Hibari, a teenager who receives an unusual gift from a prince: It's a PataPi -- a toy robot with astonishing magical properties. Before long, however, Hibari discovers that a mysterious stranger wants to get his hands on the mechanical pet. Recruiting a team of other PataPi owners, Hibari sets out to unmask the dastardly would-be thief.

Wandaba Style [TV-14] (Esisode 2)
Lady Luck takes a surprising and fortuitous turn when unknown girl group Mix Juice joins forces with scientific whiz kid Susumo Tsukumo and becomes the first band to perform on the lunar surface (that's right, the moon). After the gig, will the quartet -- Ayame, Yuri, Sakura and Himawari -- skyrocket up the intergalactic charts? Or will the foursome freeze to death in the lonely void of space? This anime series rocks!

Papuwa [TV-14] (Episode 1 & 2)
Suffering from amnesia, young Kotaro awakens from a deep sleep on the island of Papuwa, where he's plunged into a bizarre, unknown world filled with horrifying secrets. Adopted by the dubious Papuwa, his man-maid, Liquid, and other wacky gender-bending ocean creatures, Kotaro now faces enemies from his forgotten past, hallucinogenic mushrooms and bandits enticed by ransom in this eccentric anime adventure.

Chance Pop Session [TV-PG] (Episode 1 &2)
It's anime all the way when three young girls meet at a music concert given by their idol and pledge to become pop stars in their own right. They enroll together at their idol's university and are assigned together in a special class for overachievers. The girls face the rigors of school and the social life, all the while hoping they can stay together long enough to propel themselves and each other to superstardom.

Cromartie High School [TV-14] (Episode 12)
This ultra-modern anime adventure reveals just how intrigue-filled, not to mention dangerous, life as a high school teenager can be. But the challenges go far beyond the usual dating catastrophes and popularity contests. Instead, students at Cromartie High have to be prepared for the perils and hazards of the not-so-traditional school; after all, it's a frightening dog-eat-dog world, where only the toughest survive.

We also have the October issue of Shonen Jump in the library. If it goes over well (several checkouts without being mutilated), the library will get a subscription.
