The Tocker Foundation has awarded the Whitewright Public Library $10,200 for a new catalog system, Apollo by Biblionix. The funds will pay for the library's data to be imported into the new system, as well as five years of service.

The new system will allow the library's over 20,000 items to be browsed online by anyone via the Internet. Search results include cover art, title and author of the book, and will let browsers know if the item is checked out. Those interested in viewing the latest titles have the option of viewing a list of items added to the collection in the past two or four weeks.

Registered library users will be able to view items they currently have checked out, renew or reserve items, and update contact information, all from the convenience of home. Items can also be reserved based on author name, so you'll know whenever a new book is added to the collection by your favorite author(s). Email alerts can be sent three days in advance of an item's due date, as well as notifications when reserved items are ready for pickup, when items are overdue, etc.

For those without online access, the system will still provide better service than the system the library has been using for over a decade. By automating more of the work, this makes it easier for librarians to contact those not online regarding reserves, overdues, etc.

Library staff anticipates the online catalog will be available in approximately one to two months, depending upon when the transfer of data into the new program can be done as well as staff training time.

The library will publish more details once the catalog is online. You can also watch www.whitewright.lib.tx.us for more details, or call the library if you have questions, 903-364-2955.

Library Declares Amnesty Month

Is that overdue library book still sitting on your table, waiting to be returned? Did you accidentally pack a video in with your Christmas ornaments last year? Was that book you swore you returned hiding under your car seat for months?

The library wants items returned, no questions asked. To help spur returns, January is an Amnesty Month, in which any item due before December 31, 2007 will have the fine waived, whether it’s overdue one day or six months.

There are many reasons items are not returned, but the following are three of the most common:

It's just a book, what's the big deal?
There are currently 42 people on the overdue list, with materials totaling almost $1,000 – an average of $24 per person. That doesn’t include those with materials so overdue the library has marked them lost. Trying to replace missing items means there’s less money to purchase new materials, plus other patrons may be waiting on items that haven’t been returned.

I can't afford to pay a huge fine!
Some don't return overdue items because they fear a huge fine, but fines on books stop at just $3 each. Video fines stop at the cost of the item, which is generally not more than $20 each. We're much more concerned with getting things back than assessing a fine, even though fines do help us buy new materials, so if you still have items out, no matter how long it's been, please take advantage of Amnesty Month and you won't have to pay any fines as long as the item is returned in good condition.

I'm embarrassed to take something back that was due a year ago.
We know embarrassment can play a factor in not returning items. You don't have to come into the library to return items, though in general we do prefer that during operating hours. We have a drop in the wall to the left of our door for books and magazines, and a metal drop box to the right of the door for any audio/video materials. The drops are available 24/7, but if you're unable to get to the library, you may also mail items back to PO Box 984, Whitewright TX 75491. No matter how you return your item, if it was due before December 31, 2007, your fines will be dropped.

Replacement fees for damaged materials will not be waived. Amnesty does not apply to fines on materials already returned but were overdue at the time of return and not paid for. If deemed necessary, the library can file charges for theft of City property, but our goal is to get items returned without fines or legal action.

There are night drops available at the library, but if you are unable to return your item in person, you may also send them back via mail to PO Box 984, Whitewright TX 75491. You can also call the library at 903-364-2955 or email librarian@whitewight.lib.tx.us if you have any questions about overdue items.

Banned Books Week is observed during the last week of September each year (September 29 - October 6 this year). Observed since 1982, the annual event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the American Library Association (ALA), the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Association of College Stores. The Library of Congress Center for the Book endorses it.

Each year, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom receives hundreds of reports on books and other materials that were "challenged" (their removal from school or library shelves was requested). The ALA estimates the number represents only about a quarter of the actual challenges. "Most Challenged" titles include the popular "Harry Potter" series of fantasy books for children by J.K. Rowling. The series drew complaints from parents and others who believe the books promote witchcraft to children.

The challenges reported reflect a continuing concern with a wide variety of themes. Other "Most Challenged" titles include "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, for its use of language, particularly references to race; "It's Perfectly Normal," a sex education book by Robie Harris, for being too explicit, especially for children; and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, for the description of rape she suffered as a child.

The Whitewright Public Library will be highlighting books on ALA's list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–2000, as well as other challenged books, by placing a black sticker on the spine. We encourage everyone to visit the library to see the vast number of books carrying such a "black mark." You might be very surprised at what you find… and what you've read.

For more information:
ALA's 10 Most Challenged Books of 2006
The 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–2000
Forbidden Library - lists challenged and banned books, and the reasons why in many cases.

We will travel to the DART Bush Turnpike station located at1300 East President George Bush Turnpike (Bush Turnpike frontage road east of North Central Expressway and west of Plano Road). You can view a detailed map here. The Adam’s Mark Hotel is located between Pearl Station and St. Paul Station in Dallas.

We should arrive at the con and have our tickets by around 11:00 a.m. You can preview the con schedule to see if there are any particular events you’d like to see. The dealer’s room (where stuff is for sale) closes at 6 p.m., so we will start our exit at 5 p.m. and depart by 6:00 at the latest.

After we return to the DART station, we will be going to the Genghis Grill located in front of Collin Creek Mall. They serve a “make your own” stir-fry – you’ll get to pick the meat, veggies, and sauce – and the chefs will stir fry it for you.

Our departure time at the con and how busy the restaurant is will affect our return time, but we should be back the Whitewright/Bells by around 9 p.m. If parent(s) want to call for an update but if their child doesn’t have a phone, you can call Chris at 903-821-7448.

Don’t Forget!

You’ll need $35 payable at the convention door for your ticket.

Either bring money for a snack at lunch, or you can bring your own – you can bring a backpack, waist pack, etc. We recommend not taking purses or totebags, as it’s difficult to keep up with them at a busy con. It’s much easier to keep up with something that stays with you.

You’ll need $10 for dinner – this will be given to the adult chaperone at the beginning of the day, so it won’t be spent in the dealer’s room. J

You must keep your con ID with you at all times (in most cases it’s a name badge); this is your pass into the various rooms at the convention, and if you lose it, you will have to pay for a replacement.

You can bring a camera, but some parts of the con may restrict video/photos.

Check out the FAQ on A-Kon’s website for more general “What’s a con like?” questions if you’ve never been before. Both adult chaperones have been to many sci fi/fantasy cons over the years and will also answer any questions you have, though some questions may have answers specific to A-Kon that we won’t be able to answer.

The summer anime program will be held on Thursday nights, 5 p.m. @ the library. Our schedule is:

June 14th
Case Closed: The Time Bombed Skyscraper [TV-PG] (Movie: 75 minutes)
A maniacal terrorist is wreaking havoc on the big city, and only pint-sized detective Conan Edogawa can save the day in this feature-length installment of the anime series "Case Closed." Early in his career, teenage gumshoe Conan was permanently shrunk to diminutive stature, but he has an enormous brain -- and he'll need all his sleuthing skills to thwart the bomber's dastardly plans.

June 21st
Solty Rei [TV-14] (Episodes: 1 - 6)
Solty Rei, an android with superhuman strength, has lost her memory in Dome Shell City, a futuristic world where the rich lord over the destitute. After saving his life, she is adopted by bounty hunter Roy Revant, and together they fight to uncover the truth behind the faceless corporations controlling society. Solty also helps Roy search for his lost daughter, but when Solty's secret comes out, Roy's loyalty is put to the test.

June 28th
Origin: Spirits of the Past [TV-ALL] (Movie: 94 minutes)
In the wake of a large-scale disaster that literally shatters the moon, plants -- not humans -- become the world's most intelligent life forms. So how will the landscape react now that a young boy has discovered a mysterious girl who's been in a state of suspended animation for 300 years? Keiichi Sugiyama directs this futuristic anime that explores the delicate interplay between man and his natural environment.

July 5th - No program

July 12th
MoonPhase [TV-PG] (Episodes: 1 - 5)
Working as a photographer for a magazine that runs stories about the occult takes Kohei Morioka to a castle in Germany, where he meets a young vampire and brings her back with him to Japan. The rest of this supernatural anime follows their hilarious experiences living together as unlikely roommates -- a situation made all that more entertaining especially since one of them is a creature of the night!

July 19th
Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy [TV-PG] (Episodes: 1 -2)
One year after goddess Belldandy emerged from Keiichi Morisato's mirror and promised to stay with him forever, a new threat to their happiness emerges, one that could end the contract between Belldandy and Keiichi.

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie Season 3: Bride of Celestial Souls' Day [TV-MA Edited] (Episodes: 1 - 2)
The blessed day is drawing near for Valkyrie and Kazuto, but that doesn't mean things are all pretty flowers and over-priced cake. Oh, no! This wouldn't be UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie if there weren't a ship-load of problems to sort out before the happy couple can seal the deal.

July 26th
Diamond Daydreams [TV-PG] (Episodes 1 & 2)
Blending the romantic struggles of six female characters in pursuit of diamond daydreams, Bob Shirohata and Oiji Hiroi crafted this epic anime series set amid the wintry bitterness of Hokkaido, Japan. You'll get sucked into the chronicles of Atsuko Akanegi, who's dreading an arranged marriage to an insipid egotist, and Karin Shiraishi, an ailing schoolgirl with a case on her doctor.

009-1 [TV-MA Edited] (Episodes 1 & 4)
In an alternate reality where the Cold War never ended, sexy cyborg spy Mylene Hoffman undertakes daring secret missions on behalf of the Double Zero organization. This exciting anime adventure is based on the manga series by Shotaro Ishinomori. Mylene and three other cyborg agents navigate a labyrinthine world of intrigue full of explosions, betrayals and secret affairs of every sort.

A special anime program will be held during Spring Break, March 12th - 16th, at 2 p.m. each day. The library will provide popcorn and soda, but attendees are also welcome to bring their own snacks.

Note: On days with programs rated PG-14 and higher, the TV-PG program will air first, for the convenience of the younger members of our group.

Monday the 12th
Chance Pop Session [TV-PG] (Episode 1 &2)
It's anime all the way when three young girls meet at a music concert given by their idol and pledge to become pop stars in their own right. They enroll together at their idol's university and are assigned together in a special class for overachievers. The girls face the rigors of school and the social life, all the while hoping they can stay together long enough to propel themselves and each other to superstardom.

Yumeria [TV-14] (Episodes 1 &2)
Teenager Mikuri Tomokazu has a strange dream in which he sees a young girl battling her enemies. In the dreamscape, Tomikazu possesses a mysterious power and transfers it to the girl, who then quickly repels her foes. When Tomokazu wakes up, he finds the girl (named Mone) sleeping next to him. With both the fate of the dream and the real world threatened, the teen sets out (aided by five high school hotties) to fulfill his heroic destiny.

Tuesday the 13th
Cyberteam in Akihabara [TV-PG] (Episodes1 & 2)
Chronicles the exploits of Hibari, a teenager who receives an unusual gift from a prince: It's a PataPi -- a toy robot with astonishing magical properties. Before long, however, Hibari discovers that a mysterious stranger wants to get his hands on the mechanical pet. Recruiting a team of other PataPi owners, Hibari sets out to unmask the dastardly would-be thief.

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World [TV-MA Edited] (Episodes1 & 2)
Bemused teenager Takeru is beginning to feel despondent about life when he happens upon the beautiful Hikari, a girl who literally falls from the stars. Riddled with a murky past and looking toward an even darker future, Hikari unknowingly leads Takeru and his friends down a dangerous path -- one by which unsuspecting Takeru will come to learn how cruel the world really can be.

Wednesday the 14th
Get Backers [TV-PG] (Episodes 1 & 2)
Imagine returning to find your home broken into. Your possessions thrown around. Dresser drawers ransacked. Everything you own having the unmistakable feel of a stranger’s fingers on them. The only thing worse than that is what isn’t there: the things that once belonged to you that have been taken by creeps. But now is not the time to despair. There’s no time for anger. There’s only time to call Ban and Ginji. They’re the Get Backers, and they live by a simple motto: “If it was taken, we’ll get it back.” No one will be refused. (At least not until that huge tab they’ve run up gets paid off!)

Utawarerumono [TV-PG] (Episodes 4 & 5)
Hakuoro has lost his memory after succumbing to serious injuries; but thanks to a elderly woman and her granddaughter Eruruu, he is nursed back to health. His face is covered by a strange irremovable mask and he occasionally sees beastly visions. Eruruu now cares for him as he becomes accustomed to the village and its inhabitants who all bear strange ears (the women have tails too). Though these people venerate the forces of nature, desecration of an alter forces them to take drastic measures to preserve their lives from the wrath of Mutikapa-sama, guardian of the forest.

Thursday the 15h
Paniponi Dash! [TV-PG] (Episodes 1 & 2)
Good news? She’s an MIT grad.Bad news? She’s an 11-year-old MIT grad. So while Becky Miyamoto may be intellectually able, this MIT prodigy is painfully ill-equipped to deal with a group of temperamental teens, especially THIS group. There’s the ADD spazz, the angry nerd, the identical twins, the invisible girl, the freaky class president, the drama geek, the Nancy Drew, the gamer, the princess… whew!

UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie [TV-MA] (Episodes 1 &2)
Soon after her spaceship crash-lands into a Japanese bathhouse, a princess named Valkyrie saves the life of the establishment's teenage manager, Kazuto, and unwittingly transforms herself into an 8-year-old! Of course, the fact that she's dependent on Kazuto for just about everything makes searching for an antidote to her condition all the more difficult.

Friday the 16th
Shadow Skill [TV-PG] (Episodes 1 &2)
Warrior Elle "Shadow Skill" Ragu may be talented enough to join the ranks of the Sevalle, an elite breed of fighters, but her martial arts mastery doesn't seem to make life any easier. Set in the land of Kuruda, this anime follows the fearless redhead as she battles demon beasts, keeps assassins and enemy invasions at bay, teaches little brother Gau Ban to be a great warrior ... and tries to find a way to pay off her drinking debts.

Guyver [TV-14] (Episodes 1 & 2)
One of the first anime series to catch on in the United States, "Guyver" -- the tale of a boy, Sho, who stumbles on an out-of-this-world suit of armor and becomes swept up in an interstellar war -- is back. Director Katsuhito Akiyama breathes new life into the classic series with exciting action sequences as Sho struggles to evade an army of bio-monsters determined to retrieve Chronos Corp.'s most dangerous weapon -- the magic suit of bio-armor.

We have several new non-fiction titles on DVD:

A History of God - Based on A history of God : The 4000 Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam by Karen Armstrong, which is also in the library's collection. Uses balanced text analysis, archaeological insights, and more to chronicle humanity's elusive quest to know the God at the heart of the world's three great monotheistic religions--Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

4 Little Girls - The Birmingham Campaign was launched in 1963. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists were soon jailed, but it was the participation of the children that advanced the momentum of the Birmingham movement. They marched alongside the adults and were taken to jail with them as well. Because the 16th St. Baptist Church was close to the downtown area, it was an ideal location to hold rallies and meetings. On Sunday morning, Sept. 15, 1963, dynamite planted by the Ku Klux Klan, exploded in the building. Under the fallen debris, the bodies of four girls were found. Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley died because of the color of their skin. Features archival film footage, home photographs, comments by surviving family members, and interviews with local and national figures of the time.

Galileo's Battle for the Heavens (NOVA) - Dramatization of Galileo Galilei's life, including his scientific achievements and his defense of his controversial theory that the earth revolves around the sun. Also includes how letters from his illegitimate daughter, Maria Celeste, a cloistered nun, have shed new light on Galileo's discoveries and his trial for heresy.

Einstein's Big Idea (NOVA) - Dramatizes how Einstein arrived at his 1905 discovery that the realms of matter and energy are linked. Reveals the roots of this breakthrough in the human stories of scientists Michael Farady, Antoine Lavoisier and Lise Maitner, whose innovative thinking across four centuries helped lead to E=mc², and ultimately unleashed the power of the atom.

Newton's Dark Secrets (NOVA) - With vivid docudrama scenes, Nova recreates the unique climate of late 17th-century England, where a newfound fascination with science and mathematics coexisted with extreme views on religious doctrine. Unknown to most, Newton shared both obsessions.

An Inconvenient Truth - Former Vice President Al Gore explains the facts of global warming, presents arguments that the dangers of global warning have reached the level of crisis, and addresses the efforts of certain interests to discredit the anti- global warming cause. Between lecture segments, Gore discusses his personal commitment to the environment, sharing anecdotes from his experiences.

Darwin's Dangerous Idea (NOVA) - This episode interweaves the drama in key moments of Darwin's life with documentary sequences of current research, linking past to present and introducing major concepts of evolutionary theory. It explores why Darwin's "dangerous idea" might matter even more today than it did in his own time, and reveals how science might be used to explain the past and predict the future of life on earth.

How Art Made the World - Reveals how the first big artistic discoveries were made and how they have cascaded down the centuries to define the look of the present day. Encompassing everything from cave paints to ceramics and pyramids to palaces, this film explores the global trend for unrealistic depictions of the human body; the secret powers of the feature film; how politicians manage to manipulate people so easily; visions of the afterlife; and why we use imagery at all.

Anne Frank Remembered - Features vintage newsreel footage, photographs and a rare home movie to look beyond the celebrated pages of Anne Frank's diary. Includes interviews with her friends, family and protector, Miep Gies.
